So I’m going to direct my school’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
This is awfully exciting!
This is awfully exciting!
In general, I realised what was worth fighting for and what I don’t give a fuck about any more. Sorry for the depressing tone of this, but I’m not in a good mood right now. Let’s hope 2012 brings at least some joy.
My mother: Black Mirror is so unrealistic. I don't like unrealistic things.
Me: Mum, you were watching the Bourne Supremacy yesterday. You're telling me that's realistic?
My mother: That stuff happens every day in the spy world!

My submission!
You often hear the phrase “keep trying” or “never give up” tossed around acting circles, mottos I wholeheartedly agree with but would also like to develop on. A better motto perhaps for the struggling actor constantly trying to make the most of a measly part void of character would be “always be there”. Turn up to every rehearsal, learn all your lines as soon as you get them. It’s not that much to ask, and it makes a world of difference to the director that eventually it will pay off.
You get opportunities, not by auditioning for a bunch of plays or films, but by being always to hand throughout the creative process. I’ve even managed to play Claudio in a production of Much Ado with two days’ notice when the actor fell ill which, although was a demanding job, was obviously rewarding and gives you the opportunity to explore an interesting character, which hopefully is the reason you enjoy acting. In the production of Oedipus I’m currently in, I was lucky enough to be given some of the extra, small roles that mean I can beef up and develop the small essence of character “Chorus member” is graced with. I learned all my lines as soon as I got them, before everyone else, which showed the directors that I can handle big parts, and that I can do something interesting with them.
This wasn’t a post to brag about my achievements - they’re clearly nowhere numerous enough to be worthy of bragging - but rather a post which I know I wish I had seen at certain points throughout my acting career. Be that person who’s always there, and when the others inevitably show they don’t care enough, you’ll be given what you deserve. It may feel like a lot to ask, like a lot of effort to put in, but if you truly love the theatre you know anything’s worth it.
May the show go on.
